"When I was about 20 years old, I met an old pastor’s wife who told me that when she was young and had her first child, she didn’t believe in striking children, although spanking kids with a switch pulled from a tree was standard punishment at the time. But one day, when her son was four or five, he did something that she felt warranted a spanking–the first in his life. She told him that he would have to go outside himself and find a switch for her to hit him with.
The boy was gone a long time. And when he came back in, he was crying. He said to her, “Mama, I couldn’t find a switch, but here’s a rock that you can throw at me.”
All of a sudden the mother understood how the situation felt from the child’s point of view: that if my mother wants to hurt me, then it makes no difference what she does it with; she might as well do it with a stone.
And the mother took the boy into her lap and they both cried. Then she laid the rock on a shelf in the kitchen to remind herself forever: never violence. And that is something I think everyone should keep in mind. Because if violence begins in the nursery one can raise children into violence.”
As I’ve said yesterday, I like to keep personal things personal. That being said, I’ve recently come across some posts about a terrible rumor that I would like to address, because I know how fast things like that spread on this website, and this is making me really sad and mad at the same time.
Read mored, I apologize deeply if you are on mobile.
I have been trying to get together the money for HRT for a while now and honestly, it has been nearly impossible. I haven’t been able to find a job that provides the extra income required to afford getting started on hormones. For those people that aren’t aware, getting started on hormone…
Hey. I could really use your help with this… If you could… Share and such? I’m in desperate need and HRT is well outside my financial means… IT would mean the world to me just to get a share…
Guys please help her out!
Guys this girl is so sweet and so welcoming to new people, she really showed me that there are people who love you no matter what your gender identity or sexual orientation is. Please please please help her out. Even just a dollar goes a long way!
Hey lovelies… Still needing help here… 48hrs and I haven’t raised anything… I could really use your help…
Seriously though, why should she be asked to smile?
Asking a woman to smile is to make her more approachable. It’s to make you feel more comfortable - not her. I, personally, have zero fucks to give about being approachable to strange men on the street. Women are not here to entertain and please random folks.
Asking me to smile is akin to asking me to jump. Um, for what? There’s this weird responsibility placed on women to be happy and lady-like and pleasant all of the time. It rids us of being able to express our own range of human emotions.
No one is asking for men and women to not interact with each other. That’s silly. This project is asking for women to be interacted with as if they have agency over their own bodies.
“When a woman has scholarly inclinations there is generally something wrong with her sexual nature.”—
Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil (1886)
Just a friendly reminder that Nietzsche was rampantly sexist, regularly called women who didn’t submit to men “barbarous”, “charmless”, “mediocre”.
If you’re a woman with scholarly inclinations that lead you to adoring Nietzsche, just recall that he would have probably told you his age’s equivalent to “shut up, get back in the kitchen, and make me a sandwich”
it was incredibly difficult for me to get through ‘beyond good and evil’ for this reason. in the middle of talking about something really interesting, he just fucking decides ‘i haven’t interrupted this with a sexist rant in a while’ and talks about how women can’t do philosophy because of their docile nature or some shit
like he wasn’t even just casually misogynistic like most people in the 1800s. he actively made a point of pushing his misogyny every fucking chapter. what the fuck dude
girl scouts are letting in trans* girls and letting girls replace God with whatever they want in the pledge, also they use cookie income to support abortion and LGBT agendas
boy scouts are just now allowing gays in, officially in january, but gay leaders are still banned and they’re talking about segregation on camping trips, with gays and straights in different tents. also they still ban atheists,
Note to self, and everyone else: If someone ever says anything about, “Men subverting, parodying or mocking femininity”… Please be highly suspicious it could be a TERF/Radscum in disguise. (Also goes for femininity being replaced in this context women/girls/females/femaleness).
Cause a lot of radscum apparently see us as “men mocking cis women”, only they don’t call themselves cis women, they call themselves just plain old women… For that matter, there are individual men who mock women/femininity/etc/, and yes that’s awful but… I don’t really trust cis men or CAFAB people when it comes to this subject, cause it’s so often about transmisogyny.
(For that matter, YES there are cis men who mock trans women, including in the worst cases white cis men mocking trans women of color), but… Anyways… This whole subject requires extreme caution when you see it brought up though cause of transmisogynistic stereotypes.
… I wish when people talked about this subject, that they wouldn’t center it so much around cis women, trans women get mocked too, and in much worse ways, especially if said trans women are oppressed in multiple ways.
Yet so often TERFs make it all about them, sometimes even fooling thousands of people in the process, and it all comes at the expense of trans women.
A huge misunderstanding that privileged people have is that when we say we want positive representation that it means that a minority character is depicted as a good person or that the main characters treat them well. And while those are kinda nice to have, it’s not necessarily what I am looking for. Privileged people don’t have to look for such things because the media has no problem fleshing out their characters.
As a trans women, I look for stuff like this in the media that includes trans women:
how much personality does this woman have?
is she depicted as being more than just a trans woman?
is she just a plot device to showcase transmisogyny?
is any transmisogyny she may face on-screen depicted as amoral?
(if she is heterosexual) is she more than the men in her life?
is her actor a trans woman?
does this character follow any tired tropes?
how much does the show put focus on her transness?
is she supposed to be seen as undesirable?
is she being treated as a representation of all trans women?
does the show put any focus on how hard it is on other people for her to be trans? if it does, how much focus was put on how hard it is for her that others are making her life all about themselves?
is there is effort to empathize with her character?
how much of a token is she?
Like, there are so many ways to fuck up yet it is so easy to avoid it.
Want to know what Mr. Angel thinks about fundraisers?
This is an exact quote of his:
“Ugh, don’t get me started. That’s my hugest pet peeve. You want to be a man? Act like a man. Men take care of themselves. Very rarely do they fucking beg for money. Get a fucking job and save your money like a man. Asking for a handout for surgery — it really bothers me. It’s just wrong.”
The GOP has a plan to stop Wendy Davis: blatant voter suppression.
Women don’t like having their bodies policed, and are supporting Davis like no Democrat has been backed before. But Republicans aren’t fighting back on the issues — they’ve pushed through a Voter ID law that blocks the votes of countless Texas women.
The only way the GOP can keep Texas is by rigging the game. Women have the power to turn this state blue for the first time in two decades, but we need to help secure their rights first. Please, join us in calling on the Texas legislature to get rid of this unconstitutional Voter ID lawand stop trying to strip women of their votes.
but why do we live in a world where ‘i didn’t choose to be queer’ is a more respected argument than ‘it doesn’t fucking matter whether i chose to be queer’ because that pisses me off
THIS THIS THIS
It’s not a choice for a lot of people, but for example I actually have met some people who express that they feel choice and/or life experiences have had an influence on their sexual/romantic preference, but they don’t want to speak up about it for various reasons (one of which is yes, it can be used as ammunition by homophobes… but I have also seen folks express that they received backlash from other queers when they tried to talk about it.)
And really, that makes sense that something as complex as sexual/romantic preference would not be so easily reduced to “it’s in your genes” or “it’s a specific gene” and that’s it. It makes sense that it could be a combination of “nature and nurture,” genetics and environment, not to mention self-determination. And that this would have differing amounts of an effect on different people.
There’s still nothing wrong with non-hetero sexual/romantic preferences.
Would-be donors should consider whether “doing the most good” might mean supporting one of the many other effective and reputable charities that provide for the needy without engaging in anti-gay beliefs, policies, or political activities.
As a MtF transgender woman, it is very important for me to have this surgery. However I cannot pay for it. The cost of blood tests, hormones, and medical visits and college are all consuming all the money I make. If you could help this college student out, I would really appreciate it. This is the one of the final major steps that I need to complete my transition- if you could help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
my cousin posted this on his facebook and she has only been donated $5 so I thought I should boost. please reblog, donate, or boost if you can. raising that money isn’t easy and she needs help!
What's up with those "why can't we just get along" activists who think we have to be nice to our oppressors since being angry is mean? I'm sorry but that Free To Be You And Me horseshit isn't going to help people take us seriously. I have seen people follow nazis and white nationalists just so they could appear "open minded" and "tolerant". It makes me want to throw up.
hello! ok i hate to ask for help one last time but.. i have great news! my application for a service dog has been accepted. money is still tight, so i need some help with the dog’s fee. it’s a $275 down payment. my family is going to have a garage sale and we have some things to sell on ebay. i draw a little so i can take commissions for a few bucks if you’d like! also, donations are SUPER appreciated - my paypal is firstname.lastname@example.org and there is a link on my blog if you’d like to help. thank you and hapy holdays ……..
I think the anon wasn't saying that it wasn't hard for people with mental illnesses to take care of behavioral problems. I think they meant that the guy they were talking about who had autism shouldn't be excused for being misogynistic and racist. No mental illness or disability should ever excuse that at all. That's not something people are born with. Maybe an autistic person might struggle with social skills, but bigotry doesn't come prepackaged with that.
Wait what? I’m confused now. The ask about the autistic guy trying to excuse his shitty behavior by saying he was autistic and the BPD anon talking about having difficulty with unlearning problematic behavior were completely different asks? And the BPD anon pretty much agreed that having a mental illness or disability doesn’t excuse problematic behavior?
I can't speak for that anon, but as someone who has BPD, I can attest to the fact that it is incredibly hard to change certain negative behaviors, some even being in the diagnosis of the disorder. Things like recurrent suicidal thoughts and self harm, fears of abandonment and the whole splitting thing can all cause seemingly irrational or uncalled for behavior, but it often is in little control of the person. However, therapies like DBT can help a bunch with regaining that control.

You may not have heard – in fact, you almost certainly didn’t – unless you live in Pope County, Arkansas, but just before 8 a.m. this morning, December 10, an explosion rocked the Arkansas Nuclear One power plant. Only later in the day did a few news wires pick up the story, relaying virtually nothing about it, only giving the official word that the fire was “contained.”
Pope County 911 operators confirmed calls came in reporting this explosion, but have not released details about the explosion or subsequent fires. Firefighters were dispatched and fires at the site were confirmed by the department, and by photos taken by residents near the site. Newswire reports tended to stay away from these local photographs, utilizing safe-looking stock images instead. Local Arkansas stayed far away from actual images of the site, using stock images as well to project the image that the fire was minor.
One resident said otherwise. They reportedly heard a “loud, ground shaking explosion and then saw smoke.” The fire was massive.
There are no reports confirmed of deaths or injuries, and officials are telling the surrounding community of Russellville that they are in no danger, as the fire has been contained. We will update you as more information becomes available beyond the pacifying statements that do not address any concerns about radiation or the like.

Are you fucking KIDDING me, with this?
Okay I need to duck in really quickly and get a head of this hopefully before it hits 100 notes.
The type of reactors that are having these issues are known as Boiling Water Reactors and the principle is exactly what it sounds like. This technology is exceptionally old, having first been developed in the 1950s. The following years were the biggest boom in Nuclear Power generation, until the three mile island incident which resulted in no new nuclear reactors being built for over 30 years, in addition to this because of public fear there were Numerous budget cuts to both the NNSA, LANL, and the Department of Energy (There are so many links you can google them yourself) and these cuts will continue into 2014.
The FUD surrounding nuclear energy is making even funding for maintenance and evil thing.
Lemme share some stuff with you. BWRs have an efficency rate of 50% fuel usage if they are having a good day, which produces a HUGE AMOUNT OF WASTE.
New technology such as the Integral Fast Reactor is capable of reusing that waste, then refining its own waste, and squeezing out a massive amount of efficiency. No new nuclear material would be needed for many years. We could clean out Yuma mountain.
For safety consideration, IFRs employ passive thermodynamics so that in the event of a pump failure, coolant will continue to flow. New Pellet systems can prevent criticality.
The level of fission technology that is available is simply staggering at this point and time. The media needs to be ashamed for not reporting this, but if they had there would have been a shitstorm.
People need to realize the reason our shit is breaking is because it is OLD. You cannot keep a sixty year old nuclear device built for 30 years running without problems. These reactors need to be replaced.
Until intelligence about Nuclear Reactors is spread, accidents like this will continue to happen as people claim NIMBY to prevent maintenance budget approval.
I have personally worked on site at Fermi II and the technology is not good to say the least, and the only way to update things is to work inside the reactor system.
“A boy and a girl run around on the grass at the park. The boy tackles the girl. The girl laughs. She gets up and runs away. She loves to run. He chases, she turns and they grab each other, tumble and land in a pile, giggling. After a few minutes, he tackles her again and she lands a bit hard. She is bigger and physical, but he more than holds his own in roughhousing. She pauses for a second. Then she laughs again; she’s still having fun.
Dad gets his attention, and says, “If she’s not having fun, you have to stop.”
He is two. He needs to hear this now, and so does she. And again, and again, and again, so that like wearing a helmet on the bike it is ingrained.”—
I’ve done this with my kids since the moment they could each sign “more” and “all done” around 8 months old. More tickles? Or all done? More kisses? Or all done? More bouncing? Or all done?
When they’re old enough to play with others, you teach them to constantly check in with each other. Are you having fun? Or do you want to be done?
Is the shrieking laughter or fear? ASK.
Is the giggling from joy or nervousness? ASK.
Do you like being smacked with pillows? ASK.
Are you having fun wrestling? ASK.
And keep asking. What was fun five minutes ago might not be fun now.
Both kids know the moment something stops being fun, they need to stop. And they know that their wishes about what is fun and what’s not will be respected by their parents and by each other. They’ve known it since 8 months old.
This truly isn’t a difficult concept. It’s easy to teach it by example and it’s incredibly simple for children to do.
Borderline Ask Part 1: So! I definitely agree that giving people a free ride due to any type of mental issue is ableist. But here's the rub. I have Borderline Personality Disorder. I 100% do not want special treatment, or to have my behavior excused by that. But I do struggle with the fact that sometimes it IS difficult for me relearn (or unlearn) toxic behavior. Where is that line? Where does it stop being "I need patience" and start being "Please excuse all my behavior?"
I think when you start saying “Please excuse all my shitty behavior.”?
If you’re backing up when you fuck up and properly apologizing and learning from it and not repeating that mistake, you’re good.
Or are you saying you have difficulty not repeating the mistake?
Also, if you sent a second part to this Ask, I didn’t get it.
Do you think the idea of men taking up too much room on a train is a legitimate problem? I personally think it's just a silly white person problem and people who worry about it are pushing real issues aside. Also, everyone is rude on public transportation. People don't pick up their trash, let their goddamn kids scream as much as they want, are rude to the driver, and leave their purses in the next empty seat. I actually find it insulting that people think this is a serious issue.
It’s not just on trains. Men generally feel they’re entitled to take up more space. There’s been other good posts on this, I wish I had them saved, posts that point out how men don’t move aside when walking on sidewalks and shit. So yeah, I think it’s a legit issue having to do with male priv.
“[A] federal minimum wage in 1968 could have lifted a family of three above the poverty line, now it can’t even do that for a parent with one child, working full-time, 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year (yes, this calculation assumes that the parent takes no time off).”—
