White feminists:

split-the-coast:

When you discuss the wage gap, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Only white women make $0.77 to a man’s dollar.
  • Black women make about $0.68 to a man’s dollar.
  • Latina women make about $0.58 to a man’s dollar.

Intersectionality matters.

A student blows up at a teacher, drops the F-bomb. The usual approach at Lincoln – and, safe to say, at most high schools in this country – is automatic suspension. Instead, Sporleder sits the kid down and says quietly: “Wow. Are you OK? This doesn’t sound like you. What’s going on?”

He gets even more specific: “You really looked stressed. On a scale of 1-10, where are you with your anger?” The kid was ready. Ready, man! For an anger blast to his face….”How could you do that?” “What’s wrong with you?”…and for the big boot out of school. But he was NOT ready for kindness.

The armor-plated defenses melt like ice under a blowtorch and the words pour out: “My dad’s an alcoholic. He’s promised me things my whole life and never keeps those promises.” The waterfall of words that go deep into his home life, which is no piece of breeze, end with this sentence: “I shouldn’t have blown up at the teacher.” Whoa.

kai-kau:

I am getting forced out of my house soon because of being gay and transgender.

Mum: “You either need to stop acting like a boy and be a girl, or get out. You are ruining your little sister’s life with your choices. A six-year-old cannot go around and say, ‘I have a two brothers, one used to be a girl.’ That’s not right and God and I are disappointed in you.”

I don’t know what to really do. I just turned eighteen, and I don’t have a job yet since I am trying to finish up schooling.

If anyone has a room open or something in the Las Vegas area, please help.

I will try my damn hardest, even if it means I cannot go to college, to get a job and help pay bills if it is necessary.

But I cannot live here anymore because of my family.

“But most of all, stop thinking that what people so loathingly refer to as the “friendzone” is some sort of purgatory women put “nice guys” into. My friendship is not a crappy consolation prize that you’re left with if I deny you a sexual relationship– and my body is not your reward for good behavior.” —Taylor Callobre, The “Good Guy” Myth  (via albinwonderland)

“I’m so fucking sick of people being all offended at fatness. I am sick of people expecting fat people to hide themselves away out of public sight, never being seen at the shops, at the gym, in the workplace, on the street. I’ve had enough of people complaining that they saw someone’s fat arse, arms, belly, thighs, whatever. I’m tired of being told that fat people should cover our bodies, wear dark, minimising, flattering clothing. That we shouldn’t be seen in leggings, tights, sleeveless tops, short shirts, tight jeans, swimsuits and short skirts. I’m sick of fat people being told they should starve themselves, never eat. I’m royally fucking fed up with being expected to hide myself away like I’m something to be ashamed of. I’m over being hated simply because I exist in a fat body.” —

“

But then, the truth was never really the point. Thin women don’t tell their fat friends ‘You’re not fat’ because they’re confused about the dictionary definition of the word, or their eyes are broken, or they were raised on planets where size 24 is the average for women. They don’t say it because it’s the truth. They say it because fat does not mean just fat in this culture. It can also mean any or all of the following:

Ugly
Unhealthy
Smelly
Lazy
Ignorant
Undisciplined
Unlovable
Burdensome
Embarrassing
Unfashionable
Mean
Angry
Socially inept
Just plain icky

So when they say ‘You’re not fat,’ what they really mean is ‘You’re not a dozen nasty things I associate with the word fat.’ The size of your body is not what’s in question; a tape measure or a mirror could solve that dispute. What’s in question is your goodness, your lovability, your intelligence, your kindness, your attractiveness. And your friends, not surprisingly, are inclined to believe you get high marks in all those categories. Ergo, you couldn’t possibly be fat.

ATTENTION: TUMBLR USERS IN NORTH CAROLINA

The North Carolina General Assembly has introduced a constitutional amendment to the North Carolina State Constitution which would “provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”

Voting on the amendment is at the 2012 PRIMARY on MAY 8th, not in November.

Aside from the obvious discriminatory nature of the amendment, it is poorly worded and thought out and would harm the rights of ALL couples.

Remember to vote ‘AGAINST’ this amendment.

  • Check if you are registered to vote and find your sample ballot here.
  • Find a place to vote early here.
  • Join the Facebook page and spread the word here.
