Trans*ition Fund Collective: Get your writing published and help me fund my top surgery!:

Attention all LGBTQ+ writers: submissions are now being accepted for an upcoming anthology of poems, short stories, and essays written about the queer/trans experience. The anthology will be published in e-book form and will be an exhaustive collection of modern creative writing representing the lives of LGBTQ people. We like to think of it as a written time capsule. Each submission should be less than 3,000 words, and each individual may submit up to 5 pieces of original writing. Questions and submissions can be emailed to LGBTQwriting@gmail.com and submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. The earlier you submit your piece, the more likely it is for it to be published. All proceeds from the published e-book will benefit gender confirming surgeries for transgender individuals.

Ok, it’s time for an education. It’s not entirely your fault you’re utterly ignorant since the medical industrial complex AND the hatefilled society in which we all live both actively seek to reinforce the binary at any and all costs and purposefully keep people ill-informed and misinformed about the realities of biology. But after I take valuable time out of my evening to educate you on how utterly biased and flawed the modern concept of “biological sex” is you no longer have an excuse and choosing to continue to cleave to your bullshit will officially become proof that you are nothing more than a bigotted asshole.

So let’s take a look at some true facts courtesy of Dr. Anne Fausto-Sterling who is a biologist and geneticist with a PhD, you know, a doctorate, in science, that thing you seem to be so obsessed with, that thing you seem to think is absolutely “objective” and always right all the time. There are 5 specific measures of biological sex according to modern medical science.

Chromosomes (men = XY, women = XX)

Genitalia (men = penis, women = vulva and vagina)

Gonads (men = testes, women = ovaries)

Hormones (men = high testosterone, low estrogen, low progesterone; women = high estrogen, high progesterone, low testosterone)

Secondary Sex Characteristics (men = large amounts of dark, thick, coarse body hair, noticeable facial hair, low waist:hip ratio, no noticeable breast development, rough skin; women = fine, light colored body hair, no noticeable facial hair, high waist:hip ratio, noticeable breast development, smooth skin)

The thing is, in real life, very few people actually match up with all five categories. There are, of course, genetic differences that account for a decent percentage of human births like XXY, XXX, XO, and XYY (apx 1:500 births though it could easily be more than that since we don’t do genetic testing for all people and even at that ratio if there are over 6 billion people in the world 1:500 means there are a whole lot of genetically intersex people out there) but it goes far beyond that. There are people out there who have XX chromosomes, a vulva and vagina, ovaries, male secondary sex characteristics and male hormones patterns. There are people out there who have XY chromosomes, a penis, testes, female secondary sex characteristics and female hormone patterns. There are even people out there with XY chromosomes, testes, a vulva, a vagina, female secondary sex characteristics, and male hormone patterns and there are even people with BOTH male and female secondary sex characteristics at the same time and people with BOTH male and female hormone patterns at the same time regardless of their genes, gonads, and genitalia

And the thing is those people, the people with the “opposite” and/or “blended” secondary sex characteristics and “opposite” and/or “blended” hormone patterns are technically intersex assuming that the two sex system is absolutely true all the time. If there are only two sexes and there can only ever be two sexes and that’s it then all those hairy women and all those men with breasts and all those men with no noticeable body or facial hair and all those women with massive muscles and all that testosterone don’t actually count as “real” women/men and they are treated by the medical industrial complex and society alike as freaks, as anomalies, or as though they don’t actually exist because their existence breaks up the binary. In order for the binary to exist, to be real, all people everywhere must necessarily match up on all 5 markers of sex all the time. That’s not what happens in real life. In real life literally millions of people have bodies that are in some way contrary to the biological concept of the two sex system. Millions.

Millions.

And since there are millions of people out there who’s very existence defies the biological concept of a two sex system we have legitimate proof that the concept of biological sex is a social construct. Biological sex is a social construct. BIOLOGICAL SEX IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT. Seriously, biological sex is a social construct. It’s not real. It’s NOT something that is objective or unbiased or “natural.” The concept of biological sex is just as biased, subjective, and utterly flawed as the concept of gender is. Humans created biological sex just like they invented everything else. It’s a category that humans created and as such cannot be objective, can only be biased. It’s a category that humans created so they could categorize and control the world around them and when they started to discover people that didn’t fit into their idea of the way the category should function, when they started to discover trans* and intersex people they decided to hide those people, to erase those people, to ignore those people, to murder, destroy, pathologize, lock up, mutilate, and deny the very existence of those people. Rather than simply admit that the categories are wrong, are flawed, aren’t even real they chose instead to rigidly reinforce those categories at all costs even when the cost is the lives and well-beings of people.

So the next time you sit there and claim that biological sex is a real thing, is an objective thing, is an unbiased, immutable, unchanging, innate, natural thing remember that you are actively contributing to the persecution of every single person on this planet who doesn’t “fit” the way they’re “supposed” to. Remember that and think about what you’re doing. Remember that and think about the fact that trans* people and intersex people are PEOPLE, people who deserve the same rights and respect that all people deserve. Remember that biologcal sex isn’t even real, that the only reason you’re a woman and he’s a man is because some person somewhere arbitrarily decided to create the two sex system, a system that’s not real, has no basis in reality, a system that was socially constructed to help control people and their lives. Every time you hate on trans* people and try to claim that trans* women aren’t really women or that trans* men aren’t really men you are doing the same thing all those other people have done to you. You are arbitrarily creating socially constructed concepts and then using them to control people and their lives. You are being oppressive, you are instituting, perpetuating, and exploiting a power inequity. You are just as bad as all the patriarchal assholes you bitch about every single day of your life and, in fact, you are using their system - the system they created to oppress you - to oppress people in ways similar to the ways they’ve been oppressing you. You are not better than them and it could be said that you’re actually worse since you know first hand how shitty it feels to be oppressed like that and you’re so unsympathetic and blind that you’re actually willing to do it to others.

This study done by Brandeis finds that the biggest determining factor in the wealth gap between the two races is home ownership. According to the study, the four key reason for the difference is:

Because residential segregation artificially lowers demand, placing a forced ceiling on home equity for AfricanAmericans who own homes in non-white neighborhoods.

Because whites are far more able to give inheritances or family assistance for down payments due to historical wealth accumulation, white families buy homes and start acquiring equity an average eight years earlier than black families

Because whites are far more able to give family financial assistance, larger up-front payments by white homeowners lower interest rates and lending costs; and

Due to historic differences in access to credit, typically lower incomes, and factors such as residential segregation, the home ownership rate for white families is 28.4 percent higher than the home ownership rate for black families

Also according to the study, the suggested ways to correct this injustice is: Public policy can play a critical role in creating a more equitable society and helping all Americans build wealth. College loans, preferential home ownership, and retirement tax policies helped build opportunities and wealth for America’s middle class. Medicare and Social Security have protected that wealth. While the bold vision of policymakers, advocates, and others interested in social and racial justice is needed to develop a precise policy agenda, we believe the following broad public policy and institutional changes are critical to closing the gap:

Home ownership - The data in this report clearly target home ownership as the biggest driver of the racial wealth gap. We need to ensure that mortgage and lending policies and fair housing policies are enforced and strengthened so that the legacy of residential segregation no longer confers greater wealth opportunities to white homeowners than it does to black homeowners. As our nation moves towards a majority people of color population, increasingly diverse neighborhoods must deliver equitable opportunities for growing home equity.

Income - This report identifies the importance of stable, family-supporting jobs and increasing incomes as a prime avenue for building wealth. To address the gap caused by income disparity, proven tools should be fully implemented at the national, state, and local levels, including raising the minimum wage, enforcing equal pay provisions, and strengthening employer-based retirement plans and other benefits.

Education - It is clear that differential educational opportunities and rewards are further widening the racial wealth gap. We need to invest in affordable high-quality childcare and early childhood development so every child is healthy and prepared for school. We need to support policies that help more students from low-and moderate-income families and families of color attend college and graduate. And we need to value education as a public good and invest in policies that do not leave students strapped with huge debt or a reason to drop out.

Inheritance - Due to the unearned advantages it transmits across generations, inheritance widens inequality and is a key driver of the racial wealth gap. If we truly value merit and not unearned preferences, then we need to diminish the advantages passed along to a small number of families. Preferential tax treatment for large estates costs taxpayers and provides huge benefits to less than 1 percent of the population while diverting vital resources from schools, housing, infrastructure, and jobs. Preferential tax treatment for -6-dividends and interests are weighted toward wealthy investors as is the home mortgage deduction and tax shielding benefits from retirement savings.

It is time for a portfolio shift in public investment to grow wealth for all, not just a tiny minority. Without that shift the wealth gap between white and black households has little prospect of significantly narrowing. A healthy, fair, and equitable society cannot continue to follow such an economically unsustainable trajectory.

This study is particularly disheartening in light of recent events. Those who were already at the bottom, were the target of…well, keeping them at the bottom.

Timothy McNair is a graduate student of opera at Northwestern University’s famed Bienen School of Music. McNair is at the school on a full scholarship, but the 25-year-old is standing up to his school after his professor, Donald Nally, gave him an assignment to perform a song created by a racist American poet named Walt Whitman. McNair asked his instructor if he could be assigned to perform the work of other artists but Nally denied him the opportunity and told him if he didn’t turn in all of his completed work by Friday, May 17th he’d receive a failing grade. McNair refused.

“Certainly I do not deserve to fail this class. I have a 3.7 GPA. I’m an officer on three committees of this university. So what is deserving for me? Is to be able to perform two pieces and have the third piece removed because of the insensitivity,” McNair told Chicago’s WGN news station. Although the piece McNair is instructed to perform does not contain any blatant racism, McNair believes it is still offensive that he was asked to complete the works of a devout racist. “We know (he) was historically racist. He’s called African Americans ‘baboons’ and was for oppressing voting rights,” McNair said of Whitman.

It kinda sucks sometimes to be a fan of his show because satire is supposed to mock the powerful, not the oppressed. It’s frustrating and hurtful. This is one of the most painfully obvious ways that Colbert’s character goes beyond “I’m satirizing bigots by pretending to be one” and is just plain old being a fucking bigot.

A few weeks ago a rumor hit the web that Chronicle star Michael B. Jordan was the frontrunner to play Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, in Fox’s Fantastic 4 reboot. As I’ve come to expect, the internet went berserk and the racism began immediately – from cries of PC liberalism and it somehow being Obama’s fault to jokes about black men on fire that seemed more like the kind of things people would’ve said at a lynching than on the internet in 2013.
