Council of Europe tells 29 member countries coerced sterilization of transgender people is a major human rights abuse, urges action
Twenty-nine countries in Europe are insisting transgender people are sterilized before their true gender is recognized in law.
That represents a major abuse of human rights and must stop, says a new report from the Council of Europe.
In many European countries, sterilization or sex reassignment surgery or both are a requirement for the country to legally recognize a transgender person in his or her new gender.
While gender reassignment surgery may incidentally cause someone to become sterile, some countries also insist on sterilization.
Richard Köhler, policy and capacity officer for Transgender Europe (TGEU) told Gay Star News: ‘Forced sterilization is a reality for a lot of trans people in a lot of countries. Trans people are the only group in Europe who are prescribed by law to go through sterilization.
‘The debates have shown conservatives are really afraid of the “pregnant man” so they want to insist on sterilization.’
While some people want full gender reassignment surgery, others recognize the operations are complicated and can be traumatic and either don’t want to complete that process or are not capable of doing so.
But by insisting on full sterilization before you can be legally registered with your true, new gender identity the rules at present deny people the right to decide what they do with their own bodies.
*yells* STOP CENTERING YOUR MISANDRY ON PENISES OH MY GOD????? IT INVALIDATES TRANS WOMEN, YOUR SISTERS, WHO SUFFER FROM THE PATRIARCHY JUST AS MUCH IF NOT MORE THAN YOU, AND NOT ONLY INVALIDATES TRANS MENS IDENTITIES, BUT LETS THEM CONTINUE TO GORGE THEMSELVES ON MALE PRIVILEGE AND FACE NO REPERCUSSIONS
I don’t know if I’d say they have a vagina fetish, but. Kind of hard to call yourself a lesbian when men are included in your dating pool. I mean, occasionally a lesbian might find a dude that just fits (or a gay guy might find a girl) and that’s cool, but that’s another story.
Lesbians including trans men but not trans women in their dating pool is just plain cissexist. They aren’t viewing said trans men as men. They’re viewing them as women. And they’re viewing trans women as men. They’re invalidating both trans men and trans women’s gender identities.
Basically, they’re shitty as fuck people.
[TRIGGER WARNING FOR CISSEXISM]
They reblogged this picture and added a caption that said “this is a safe space for both sexes and all body types.”
Shortly afterward, they received an anonymous message:
It says “Before anyone gives you shit, you should probably change it to “all genders” instead of “both sexes.” Love this blog <3.”
To which FYBC replied: “Except that both sexes covers it. Thanks for following.”
When further questioned about their cissexism:
They were asked ““both sexes covers it.” So you don’t accept transsexual or intersex bodies or anything in between? Huh.”
FYBC replied: “As I have explained already to one person.
Sex and gender are not the same thing. Sex is biological, gender is social (predominantly). And intersexuality is not only so rare that it becomes insignificant for science purposes, but intersex people present female. Therefore, both sexes. Don’t get so worked up over something so insignificant, it’s the internet, man.”
Then, FYBC made another mistake. They’re on a roll, so why not, right?
They admitted that their blog is not meant to be intersectional, that they shouldn’t accept criticism because it’s technically a “personal blog” even though her personal blog is actually this one, she also calls people who don’t fit in the gender and sex binaries “abnormal” and follows up by saying that she’s willing to help anyone, even if they’re a “muppet,” which is clearly another way in which she is shaming and dehumanizing people who don’t fit in normative gender and sex binaries.
I’ve never liked their blog because they don’t seem to be a safe space for fat people and they’re okay with promoting weight loss “progress” posts. They also have a really gross link to another tumblr on their sidebar for a blog called “gentlemen prefer curves” - as if anyone should give a fuck what men prefer when this blog is supposedly trying to instill confidence in people of all body types. These are just a few reasons to add them to a list of shitty blogs.
