Hello.

Theme for next week

icanstandforsomething:

Over the next week (or two!), I will be creating posts to raise awareness about issues relevant to women, gender, and sexuality.

Do you have a cool idea for a simple graphical representation of these issues? I welcome your suggestions! Keep in mind that I would like to stick to my current posting format for now (take a look at some of my previous posts if you’re unsure).

I also certainly welcome links to articles pertaining to these topics that I can reference in the photo captions.

Send me messages in the askbox OR send an email to standforsomethingtumblr AT gmail

My motto. Use your money to stand for something you believe in.
-
Congress is not always as fast or as effective at regulating businesses or changing business practices as your dollar can be. But companies will listen to your money. Demand drives markets. It is up to you to demand better.
-
If you don’t like pesticides and harmful chemicals in the environment, then buy organic foods and use biodegradable soaps. If you don’t like unnecessary use of antibiotics and the dangerous development of drug resistance, then buy organic milk. If you don’t like child labor, then research the employment practices of all the products you purchase. The possibilities for making a positive impact are endless.

U.S. health care costs far exceed those of other nations, relative to the size of the economy or GDP. Despite the huge amount of money spent on health care here, the U.S. also has poorer health outcomes than do other developed nations.
-
Clearly, the U.S. is doing something wrong. Changes must be made before the nation faces a health care crisis. Otherwise, we will only be able to do too little, too late.
-
If the United States were to follow in the footsteps of other developed countries, a nationalized single-payer health care system would produce better health outcomes at a lower cost for Americans. The poorest and most disenfranchised among us would be able to seek medical care they may desperately need. And although more people would be able to get medical care, we would still be paying less for health care than we currently pay.

Women face some discrimination in all lines of work. On average, women are paid less than men with equal qualifications for the same jobs. In the fields of science and math, women face particularly difficult struggles to overcome these inequalities in these male-dominated realms.
-
Some young girls think they are not “able” pursue studies in the fields of science and math because they are girls. It is up to us to tell them otherwise. We should be encouraging our kids—both boys and girls—to pursue careers in science and math. But we should strive in particular to find strong women mentors in science for our girls.

April is STD Awareness Month.
Share this post to raise awareness.
By the age of 25, half of all sexually active people will have contracted at least one STD. Because most of these people are unaware of their disease status, they may continue to spread STDs to others by having unprotected sex. This includes HIV.
Planned Parenthood and other clinics may provide testing services at little or no cost to those who would otherwise not be able to afford these services. Testing may be as easy as providing a urine sample or having a blood test.

Safe, protected sex helps prevent the transmission of sexually-transmitted diseases. Safe sex also helps prevent unwanted pregnancies.
-
Teenagers are going to continue having sex, no matter how much abstinence-only education they get. Let’s keep them informed about their options, starting with an emphasis on safe, protected sex to prevent unwanted pregnancy and the transmission of STIs. And let’s give them alternative options for more “wholesome” activities by promoting after-school programs, maintaining art programs at schools, and getting them interested in and excited about what else makes them special individuals.

Did you know that Chick-fil-A openly donates money to anti-gay Christian groups? Now you do. Fried chicken does not taste as delicious when you know that your purchase funds the perpetuation of intolerance in America.
Share this post to encourage others to increase awareness about where their money is being spent and to promote a  BOYCOTT of Chick-fil-A restaurants. There is power in numbers.

Do your own research. What other products do you buy that may be funding a cause that you don’t believe in? What other products do you buy that may be harming the environment? Don’t forget: Your dollar is your vote.
