My friends Meg Liffick and Joe Ball got married yesterday.
When it came time for the couple’s traditional first dance, Joe read prepared remarks explaining that instead of dancing together, they wanted to open the dance floor to their gay and lesbian friends who are still legally denied the right to marry.
This was a large and very diverse wedding in a state that doesn’t even recognize same-sex civil unions, let alone marriage. And yet the ovation that these people received while dancing to The Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” was like nothing I’ve ever heard at any wedding. If there were dry eyes, I didn’t see any.
Change is coming.

This is simply amazing.

BREAKING: Judge orders Prop 8 case closed

treesong:

gaywrites:

Buzzfeed reports that the trial court judge in California who has taken over hearing the federal court case over Prop 8 has declared the case closed. Technically, this should allow same-sex couples to marry in California starting immediately.

The order comes despite the fact that proponents of Proposition 8 have requested the Supreme Court to review the case because, Judge James Ware wrote today, all requests to stay the judgment in the case have been denied. The proponents made no request of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court to stay the case pending resolution by the Supreme Court.

It is not immediately clear what impact Ware’s order will have or whether the proponents of Proposition 8 will seek a stay of the order with a higher court.

Holy CRAP you guys, this is huge. If the Supreme Court refuses to take this case, this is over and we’ve won. HOLY CRAP. In the meantime, GO GET MARRIED IN CALIFORNIA!

OH MY GO D

FUCKING COME ON GUYS PLEASE.YES. PLEASE??

yo guys

President Obama has announced that he supports marriage equality for all Americans.

Now we’re facing a critical moment. We must show that the American people stand behind the President and support extending the rights and responsibilities of marriage to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans.

His endorsement of marriage equality tells our country — and the entire world — that all of America’s families deserve the benefits of equal protection under the law.

Add your name and stand with President Obama in support of marriage equality.

check this shit and sign it we gotta support our badass president

I’m signing this, but two things.

  1. This was a campaign promise back in ‘07 and ‘08. Obama supporting marriage equality should not be news.
  2. He’s still going to leave it up to the states to decide. Which is the same stance as Dick Cheney. He just said this as a personal belief, which is good, but it’s not what we, the LGBTQ community, actually need.

He also released this repetition of statement too little too late, as North Carolina just now passed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. A few weeks ago, this statement would have been more helpful.

YAY WHOOPEE OBAMA ~CAME OUT IN SUPPORT~ OF “SAME SEX MARRIAGE”

myasphyxiatedmind:

LET US ALL CELEBRATE NOW THIS IS SUCH A BREAKTHROUGH

Seriously?

Seriously?

1996.  Obama is running for senator of Illinois.  He’s asked by Outlines, a Chicago LGB paper, about marriage equality.  Obama responded: “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.”

Two years later, when he was up for re-election, he replied to the same question by the same paper: “Undecided.”

UNDECIDED

Now suddenly he’s saying that he ~favors~ the legalization of “same sex marriage” and everyone’s acting like he’s gone through some incredible evolution of morals and that this is some kind of step forward for marriage equality.

Bullshit.

In the ABC interview everyone is so thrilled about, Obama even says that he thinks the matter should be up to state’s rights.

State’s rights.

Exactly one day after North Carolina used its state’s rights to strip marriage rights from others.

Why is everyone lapping this up?  Why are so many people falling all over themselves to ~thank~ Obama for his ~evolution~?

Just because he’s president of the US doesn’t mean he should be getting some fucking ally cookies for basically saying, “Oh yeah, I mean, I totally think ~gays and lesbians~ should be allowed to marry but state’s rights lol.”

Fucking disgusting.

Points that I was not aware of.

^ Also.

Did you know that Chick-fil-A openly donates money to anti-gay Christian groups? Now you do. Fried chicken does not taste as delicious when you know that your purchase funds the perpetuation of intolerance in America.

Lesbian divorce case starts in Maryland

gaywrites:

In today’s sad-but-real story:

A lesbian couple married in California are suing in Maryland for their right to get divorced. Their divorce request was denied by a judge because their marriage wasn’t recognized in Maryland.

Maryland doesn’t allow same-sex marriages, but it does recognize valid marriages performed in other states, and there is no law banning the recognition of same-sex marriages. A few gay couples in Maryland have been able to get divorced, but many others have been denied.

It bums me out a little that we have to work through this, but divorce is part of marriage culture. Everyone deserves the right to be with - or not be with - whoever they please. Updates on this one soon.
