Allistair Pinsof (DtoidAllistair) on Twitter
The latest from Allistair Pinsof (@DtoidAllistair). Features Editor at http://Destructoid.com. Previously employed by Flixist, The Escapist, and The Daily Texan. Just an average guy living in a storage unit. Austin, TXa woman (Chloe Segal) game developer attempted suicide yesterday. this fucking game journalist reveals that she is trans, refers to her as he and spends a bunch of time moralising about her “lies” etc and how he’s revealing the “truth” and he actually says “Since Chloe Sagal has done exactly what she said she would do if I told the truth, I’m going to go ahead and tell it.” she threatened to commit suicide if he revealed it because IT’S A SECRET SHE DIDN’T WANT TALKED ABOUT but he takes that to mean that since she attempted to he can reveal it and it’s all ok and what a fucking horrible, evil person
So I’m reblogging this again to say:
his excuse for calling her by male pronouns was that she was not out in her offline life.
“She used male pronouns IRL so I’m just using the pronouns she would’ve used” is roughly his argument
It couldn’t possibly be because she was afraid of coming out IRL, could it? Like, it couldn’t possibly be because ignorant people like you would be coming for her when she transitioned IRL, right? Nobody would ever hurt a trans* woman just for existing, right? She wouldn’t have gotten death threats, right? Not IRL! Not from the gaming community!
*hisses at him*
there are a lot of things that put alistair pinsof in the “piece of shit” category. let’s go through them one by one, shall we (tweets are read bottom to top)
He is willfully and cruelly ignorant about depression and suicide attempts, and holds Chloe in contempt for attempting to kill herself.
He misgenders a transgender woman, and defends it in a really gross way.
He is more concerned with the integrity of crowdsourcing sites than a woman’s life or a trans person’s right to not divulge their gender identity.
alistair pinsof, you are a tremendous piece of shit. go fuck yourself.
edit: i missed this one
He compared a trans woman’s gender identity to Djokhar Tsarnaev and the Boston bombings:
Here it is! I’m not 100% sure if I like how it came out… it almost seems a bit too cutesy for the subject. Maybe I just like drawing cute clothes and bright colours too much!
This is for a contest with the Canadian Human Rights Agencies for their conference in May. All the Advanced Illustration students and Design students had to enter as part of their final. Kinda pissed that they required us to print it off at 24 x 36…. which I think is way too big and expensive ($50!!) for most students and their budget. We don’t even get to keep the posters. And the top prize is only $200. I feel kinda ripped off. :/
EDIT: A couple of people have sent me notes saying that “Transgendered” is incorrect terminology. I apologize, I kind of added the text last minute, and should have known better. I’ve uploaded a fixed version. :)
[content note: transmisogyny, misgendering, rape]
I am getting more than a little tired of “allies” who only think of trans women as women until it becomes inconvenient for them and their view of gender.
You know the type:
“I know trans women are women, but gender-segregated bathrooms exist for a reason.”
“I know trans women are women, but it will dilute our message if we stop talking about women in terms of vaginas (or vice versa).”
“I know trans women are women, but women have a right to their own spaces free of any masculine energy.”
“I know trans women are women, but they obviously don’t have any right to call themselves lesbians.”
“I know trans women are women, but you have to understand that your presence could be triggering to rape survivors.”
“I know trans women are women, but I have to question the sexuality of any guy who goes out with one.”
“I know trans women are women, but you have male privilege so you can’t possibly understand what women go through.”
“I know trans women are women, but this is a women’s shelter, so we can’t help you here.”
And so on, and so forth. If you’re a trans woman, you’ve probably heard a ton more examples.
And the thing is, I don’t think that most of these people are being deliberately disingenuous (one glaring exception, of course, being a certain radscum lady who shall remain nameless); I think they’re telling the truth as they see it. I think they really do think of trans women as women.
Except when they don’t.
Except when they feel like it would be too hard to reframe an issue in order to include us.
Except when their own unexamined prejudices come to the fore and dominate their approach to an issue.
Except when they realize that walking their talk requires a far more radical shift in their understanding of gender than they are prepared for, or than they ever wanted to attempt.
And so they decide that it’s easier to just revoke our identities situationally — to say that, yes, we’re women, and we’re just as much women as cis women are, but we’re still somehow not woman enough to fit their views, their spaces, their institutions.
It’s bullshit. But it’s bullshit that’s all too common. And it hurts.
This is basically a grab bag of things that piss me off when I’m playing servers on team based games. Also why you should stop doing/should not do said things.
1. At some point you will probably refer to someone by the wrong gender and/or pronouns.
Communicating over voice is tricky, and often time we end making assumptions. This often leads to the awkward moment of gender confusion.
What you should do: Apologize, make a mental note to update how refer to that individual and move on.
Do not: Ask questions in a condescending fashion, insist someone doesn’t sound like what they say they are, or in general disagree with them. Their gender and pronouns are their business, not yours.
2. Rape is not a synonym for defeat.
Not now, not ever. Using the word rape in such a casual fashion trivializes rape. Do not do it. This includes but is not limited to: saying we got raped, comments about needing lube during a loosing game, or references to pillow biting.
3. Do not use racial slurs.
Just don’t. Even if your intent isn’t racism, the slurs themselves come from a history of racism, and unless you’re part of the group they’re directed at, using them is none of your business.
4. Don’t be sexist.
Even in an ironic fashion. Jokes about there being a woman on the server are not funny. Saying women are less good at whatever game because of their gender is not okay. Sexist jokes are not okay. No, not even if you’re being “ironic”. just don’t fucking do it.
5. Don’t use sexist insults.
Included but not limited to: cunt, whore, slut, and anything else you might think of.
6. Don’t be homohpobic.
Including using gay=bad. Also don’t say fag or faggot. Again, the only reason these words have come to mean bad is because of homophobia deeply ingrained in society.
7. Don’t use insults relating to disability or mental health.
Again, the fact that these have become a synonym for bad is because of how society treats people with disabilities.
This includes: fluffed, autistic (no really people use it as an insult), psycho, insane, crazy.
8. The Trading Rider
Never saw you were gypped off or jewed. Both racial slurs. Seriously don’t do it.
9. The Catchall Clause: Drop your assumptions.
In general just don’t use things that aren’t a problem as insults. Say what you mean. If you’re loosing horribly, say what it is, not rape. If someone fucks up push, they’re not fluffed, they’re just not doing good at the game.
Things about people, about their lives, like their ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, mental status, ability status, their religion are not things that are okay to use as insults. So please, don’t do it.
more receipts.
Why does anyone listen to her anymore?
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME.
I couldn’t even watch the whole video.
This is disgusting.
Wow, okay I’m done with this one. Are you fucking serious?
Hm. This seems to have been a while ago, and I can’t find the evidence for the non-apologies I’ve heard of. I’ve heard a lot of stuff about her being offensive and unapologetic, but I can’t find the evidence for it. Skeptical of her now. Also she did a video on pansexuality in which she used “genderblindness” as legit evidence. So…
I just reblogged something with a bunch of links to her other bullshit, including her non-apology.
So that radscum I was arguing with who claimed that trans women aren’t women took me and another trans girl’s response to their abuse and posted it on another blog, saying “We offer this as a public service to the younger Gays and lesbians of the world – because it is a rough time to be “just” Gay or “just” Lesbian.”
and despite claiming they respect me as a woman, my response was tagged with
#disgusting behavior #cult language #oppression olympics #abuse #mra #VIOLENCE
They just fucking called me a men’s rights activist for FIGHTING FOR FUCKING TRANS WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND IDENTITIES. I am beyond pissed now.
Sorry for the wait! I’ve been hard at work over on my other Tumblr writing and drawing another comic called White Noise, which I hope y’all will check out when it starts up in August. :D
Also—holy shit, three hundred followers! Thanks…
